The official Palm Springs Police Officers Association coin.
The Military Challenge Coin has a deep and rich history in the United States Military. The tradition began during WWI when a lieutenant gave his pilots small, bronze medallions to signify their service together. When a pilot went down behind enemy lines and was captured by the Germans, they confiscated all personal belongings except the coin. The pilot later used the coin to prove his status as an American soldier. It then became a tradition for service men and women to carry their coin at all times. To ensure compliance, individuals would "challenge" each other to produce the coin.
Our Patch: The background of our patch is significant of the clear blue desert sky; the mountains in the patch are the beautiful San Jacinto mountain range; the green vegetation depicts the various colorful flowers that grow wild in our desert; and last but not least, are the masterful palm trees that line the many streets of our city.
