The Palm Springs Police Officers' Association endorsed the following candidates for Palm Springs City Council elections which were held on November 6, 2007:
  • Steve Pougnet, Mayor
  • Rick Hutcheson, City Council
  • Lee Weigel, City Council
  • John Williams, City Council

Our Associaiton believes these candidates are the most qualified because of their past experience with public safety issues. We believe that public safety is one of the most important issues facing local government because crime directly impacts the economy and tourism.

Thanks for voting on Tuesday November 6, 2007. Steve Pougnet was elected as our new Mayor, Rick Hutcheson and Lee Weigel were elected as our new City Council Members.

Steve Pougnet
Steve Pougnet was a City Council member and Mayor Pro Tem. He prides himself on knowing the issues facing public safety.

On Crime & Safety, Steve says, “Part of the growing pains for any city is grappling with the problem of crime in our neighborhoods. As Mayor my public safety plan will include hiring more police officers to meet the needs of the growing number of residents and visitors. My plan will also include supporting and funding effective prevention programs. Through our neighborhood organizations I will encourage and support Neighborhood Watch programs and other activities that promote neighbors helping neighbors.”

Rick Hutcheson
Rick Hutcheson will bring needed development of tourism-related and other business to Palm Springs, and with that, the necessary public safety.

“I appreciate very much this endorsement by the Palm Springs Police Officers Association,” said Hutcheson. “Better than anyone, the line officers who protect us daily know what needs to be improved. I agree with our citizens who insist that the next City Council must place a higher priority on public safety. We need a stronger commitment to protect our homes and businesses from crime.”

Hutcheson serves on the Palm Springs Police Advisory Board and also is a graduate of the Palm Springs Citizens Police Academy. He is a strong proponent of making public safety, police and fire protection top priorities for Palm Springs residents.

Lee Weigel
Lee Weigel was our past Chief of Police, with 33 years law enforcement experience. On Crime and Safety Lee Weigel said, “Throughout Palm Springs people tell me they are worried about property crime and gangs. There have been more reported incidences of property crime and an increase in gang activity. My track record proves I will be a dedicated crime fighter on the City Council. That’s why the Palm Springs Police Officers’ Association trusts and strongly endorses me. After 32 years as a Palm Springs police officer, I know there are two effective ways to reduce crime: Increase police visibility and community involvement. I also propose Town Hall meetings with residents to improve communications, share ideas, and help our police efforts.

Russ Bogh
Russ Bogh
The Palm Springs Police Officers’ Association has endorsed Russ Bogh for candidate for the 37th Senate District election in 2008. Russ Bogh has been a strong, consistent supporter of police officers in this community and statewide; he was someone we could always turn to in the Legislature to fight for us. He fought to keep our local funds here in the Coachella Valley, instead of letting Sacramento raid our city coffers to pay off their debts. Russ is the kind of leader we need in the State Senate. We are proud to support him, and we hope the voters of the Coachella Valley will support him too.

Here are just a few of former Assemblyman Russ Bogh’s legislative highlights:

  • Co-wrote a measure forcing the Legislature to use our gasoline taxes only for traffic relief projects
  • Authored state law permitting local governments to regulate those group homes that house convicts
  • Co-authored a bill stopping Los Angeles from stealing our school funding so that our local schools get millions of dollars more
  • Sponsored state law preventing defense attorneys from exposing the private sex history of rape victims
  • Authored a measure that prevents restricting a police officer from detaining any person that is suspected of illegally entering our country
  • Co-sponsored legislation preventing access to Viagra prescriptions for sex offenders on Medi-Cal
